@gruber re: your post today on Apple & MLK, and from the dept of tiny symbolic (superficial?) acts of putative resistance - 👀 the clues & answers to today's crossword mini from Apple News.

I'm not *always* a colored vinyl guy - pressing a reissue in a limited edition of purple isn't going to get me to pay an extra $10. But - and I'm behind on this one, as I think this was a Record Store Day release from last June - the Tangerine Dream *Live at Reims Cinema Opera* on orange cloudy vinyl? That's the perfect match of sound and image.

Hey metro #Detroit - I’ve been working with the good people at the #FerndaleLibrary over the last couple of years on a project we call The Film Club. (Pretty self-explanatory.) Last night we screened But I’m a Cheerleader
to a packed patio at The Ferndale Project.

Next edition is on July 11 to talk about Frances Ha. We’re voting now on what the August film should be. Cast your ballots now:

A rant into the darkness: it is saying something that I find the March Madness app so user-hostile, considering that I have become inured to expecting the very least from live-streaming sports apps. It feels like the person whose hand is on the “Monetization vs User Experience” dial cut their teeth designing pop-over ads or something. Don’t these people have League Pass?

(& shameless self-promo: I’ve got an essay in there on what Paul ValĂ©ry and Craigslist have to teach us about film festivals after COVID-19 - for those who dig on those kinds of things. https://link.springer.com/chapter/10.1007/978-3-031-14171-3_3)

Rethinking Film Festivals in the Pandemic Era and After

This is an open access book. It looks at the effects of COVID-19 on film festivals and further theorizes film festivals in the age of social distancing.

One of the rare joys of middle age is that you’ve lived long enough to forget about things like the twenty-year old box of slides sitting in your closet. Shoutout to my local public library, the Ferndale Area District Library, for lending me a slide scanner, too. A reminder that 20 years ago, Andre the Giant still had a Posse.

#Infantino is as awful as everyone is saying he is, but Tom McTague’s analogy to Trump in #theatlantic resonates:

“With Hillary Clinton, I said, ‘Be at my wedding,’ and she came to my wedding. You know why? She had no choice! Because I gave.” Well, Qatar—just like Saudi Arabia, UAE, Russia, and China—has been giving to the West for years. And now we are going to the wedding.

The Qatar World Cup Exposes Soccer’s Shame

The absurd spectacle of a tiny Gulf petrostate hosting the world’s premier tournament reveals the ugly side of “the beautiful game.”
