the holiday came and went,
wrapping paper, tissues, and discarded boxes piled on the back porch,
the only evidence of weeks of planning -
over in minutes.
family plans were made, then cancelled, then revived and cancelled again,
by sickness and long distance annual travel constraints.
why does my family live 1,000 miles away?
diaappointment for the kids,
and selfishly myself.
how many more christmases do we get?
haiku:
a cold sky stares down,
as pin pricks of light glisten,
small but not alone.
not a haiku:
chilled night air,
rushes down the neck of my coat,
as I pause -
on my walk to the curb,
and look into the night.
a cold sky stares back,
blackness -
dotted with pin pricks of light,
its vastness swallows me.
i feel small but not alone.
