@gonzo_askold @ewen @satchmo35 Also (we are seeing a pattern here) I believe I can explain things pretty good, but pros like 3blue1brown or Veritasium or xkcd do it 1000 times better. There are people explaining science. The sad thing is that it is a niche topic on YT, but not of any mainstream interest. Attention economy.
@ewen I think -and hope- there might be the space to develop further that in-between sweet spot which is visual pedagogy. Communication experts, artists, designers (and sometimes myself) translating the scientific information into digestible bits and help the research reach a wider audience. I believe it has great potential.
@gonzo_askold @ewen @satchmo35 Also, many things like "how does a virus infection work" don't need a world-leading expert to explain. I did not see a single article in a German newspaper, not a single show on German television during all of the COVID pandemic that explained how a virus infection works or how a vaccination works. Instead, they were reporting infection numbers, every single day. Also, nobody explaining Simpsons paradox, why are more elderly dying if they have the vaccinations? Etc
@gonzo_askold @ewen @satchmo35 9 out of 10 artists cannot and will not explain their art. You can in fact study that. Also, it is not about me being unable to explain my science. This just takes away another x hours per week, in addition to administration and reviewing and managing and everything else. Also, it is not only "this is not the job I applied for", it is not well-spend money. I need 3-5x longer to explain than a pro would, and I don't do science in that time.

In case you needed another one, I just found a great example why you shouldn't use LLMs for researching stuff.

I came across a citation of an article in a journal that seems a little ... off.

First I googled "[name of journal] legit" and the "AI overview" confidently confirmed "Yes, that seems to be a legitimate journal, and here's why."

Then I googled "[name of journal] sketchy", and the "AI Overview" confidently confirmed "Yes, that seems to be a predatory paper mill, and here's why."

> How Russia is waging a shadow war against the West. Data analysis

> Russia has significantly intensified its campaign of sabotage, subversion, and other hybrid attacks against European countries. These actions aim to destabilize European governments, undermine public support for Ukraine, and weaken NATO's and the European Union's collective ability to respond to Russian aggression.

(I dont know if I am doing this right -- should I reply to my own post to extend it? Darn, too many user interfaces.)

We are right now moving into a brand new building and the project will have a pretty decent dedicated compute server, so the facilities are fantastic! :tada: The project is located in Jena, Germany. :de: Contact me in case of questions. Please forward (somehow) to people who might be interested, thanks!

Mitarbeiterin ERC BindingShadows | Lehrstuhl Bioinformatik Jena

The Chair for Bioinformatics, Institute of Computer Science at the Friedrich-Schiller-University Jena offers the following positions: Multiple postdocs and PhD students as research associates (Wissenschaftliche Mitarbeiterin) These positions are part of the ERC advanced project BindingShadows, funded by the European Union through the European Research Council. Liquid Chromatography Mass Spectrometry (LC-MS) is the predominant experimental

*PhD and postdoc positions as part of the ERC project BindingShadows*

If you are skilled in bioinformatics and/or machine learning and want to work on mind-boggling new computational methods for analyzing small molecule mass spec data, please apply! The project is running for 5 years, there are 2 postdoc and 2 PhD positions, minimum.

Here's how censorship is starting to work in US universities:

"A&M Dean removed following student complaints over curriculum."
https://www.kbtx.com/2025/09/09/am-dean-professor-removed-following-student-complaints-over-curriculum/

PS: Watch the video. The student didn't say to the prof, "I think you're teaching something untrue. Can you say more about the evidence?" She said, "You're teaching something that Donald Trump says is untrue." When the student brought her "documentation" to the university president, he fired the prof and the dean of her school.

The Department of Justice has also acknowledged the situation and said it would be investigating.
