“Caring about students also means deliberately caring about the world we are helping them grow into.”

Our Union Called for a Cease-Fire. It's About Our Students.

Why the membership of the Chicago Teachers Union voted overwhelmingly to support a cease-fire—and how we see ourselves as part of a larger labor movement for peace and justice.

In These Times

We all know that the GOP always accuses the Democrats of whatever it is they are guilty of.

Take the Biden impeachment inquiry. The real corruption we should be investigating is by Jared Kushner, the son-in-law of Donald Trump, whose private fund received $2 billion from the Saudis. Republicans want to distract from that by accusing Joe Biden of corruption, without any evidence, because his son Hunter made money from foreign sources.

Every accusation is a confession. That’s how we know that there is much for them to hide when it comes to Jared Kushner. You can tell by how desperate they are to claim the Biden family is corrupt.

This is fucking bleak. HISD, the school district I grew up in from Kindergarten through high school, is eliminating librarians and turning libraries into “discipline centers” at 28 schools. https://www.click2houston.com/news/local/2023/07/26/hisd-to-eliminate-librarians-turn-libraries-into-discipline-centers-at-28-campuses/

Houston Independent School District will be eliminating librarian positions at 28 schools this upcoming year and utilizing some of the libraries as ‘Team Centers” where kids with behavioral issues will be sent, the district announced.

Writing is saying to no one and to everyone the things it is not possible to say to someone. - Rebecca Solnit

Generally speaking, I think the conversation about gender affirming care for youth should focus on allowing parents to make the final decision, and on pushing back against bad journalism that leads parents in the wrong direction on the science.

Politically, the GOP has made a big bet on parents rights. So it makes it easier to argue against state bans to use that pre-existing propensity to support parents' deciding for their kids.

But that's not ultimately why I think it's the right approach.

Studies consistently show that having affirming parents is one of the most powerful protective factors for trans youth. Way too few trans kids have that. THAT is what needs to change to really make a different in kids' lives.

Changing parents hearts and minds may be hard, but it's the only way I can think of to really help the majority of trans youth.

Pretty sure the #CTA robot voice just asked me to leave the seat next to me free of belongings “so lovers can sit down.”
Seat clear, still waiting.
