Combining software and hardware to do fun (and sometimes practical) things. At work: linkedin.com/in/jpasqua/
@bikerglen High frequency noise, even low amplitude, can be a bear for the derivative since it “amplifies” high frequencies. Depending on what your noise looks like and whether you care about the time delay of the extra analog_read calls, a low pass filter might help.

Check out the guts of a #Soyuz mechanical navigation computer thought to be from the The Apollo-Soyuz Test Project. Apparently this style of nav computer was still used until ~2001.

It's an amazing piece of machinery which you can see for yourself on the #CuriousMarc channel, and read about in detail on Ken Shirriff's blog (@kenshirriff).

@skrishna I typically only check mastodon in the morning and evening (it was the same for twitter) so i always miss “flash” events like limited beta signups. I’m really looking forward to the release.
@ivory I'm very much looking forward to the Mac version. I am never quick enough for beta versions, so I'll be holding out for the release version when it hits the App Store.
@trevorflowers An aside - Mark was in the office next to me briefly when he first visited Xerox while still at U of Maryland (I think that’s where he was). Such a nice guy and so sad he passed so young.
@df And here I thought I was the only one with an oddly persistent memory of that talk.

@kenshirriff how has reverse-engineering this mechanical device compared to your normal electronics reversing process?

Fascinating thread.

As a committer on a couple of medium-popularity projects I couldn't agree more with this:

"Maintaining a successful open source project is Good Will Hunting in reverse. You start out as a respected genius, and end up being a janitor who gets into fights."

@trevorflowers Looking good!
@geerlingguy If they managed to get by with just a little ghosting, that’s pretty good.
