Check out the guts of a #Soyuz mechanical navigation computer thought to be from the The Apollo-Soyuz Test Project. Apparently this style of nav computer was still used until ~2001.

It's an amazing piece of machinery which you can see for yourself on the #CuriousMarc channel, and read about in detail on Ken Shirriff's blog (@kenshirriff).

As a committer on a couple of medium-popularity projects I couldn't agree more with this:

"Maintaining a successful open source project is Good Will Hunting in reverse. You start out as a respected genius, and end up being a janitor who gets into fights."

Processor flags indicate if values are zero, negative, overflowed, and so forth. Flags are critical for loops and conditional statements. But how are they implemented? I took a close look at the silicon of the Intel 8086 processor (1978) to find out.

A thought for the @ivory team. Since many people are new to mastodon and to federation, I suspect that choosing the “right” instance may not be top of mind for them.

Since changing instances is a bit of a chore, it might be nice for ivory to help in the process.

I know this isn’t really a client/app task, but the app is what people interact with most so they will be tempted to look there for help.

This is obviously not a high priority item, but I wanted to pass along the thought.

Mine starts at 29:31 and I highly recommend watching all 8 presentations. Juried by Tanja Geis for the Women Eco Artist Dialog, “The Power of Empathy” highlights the power of empathy in finding our way through the environmental and social-justice challenges confronting our world.
