Did things in messaging, #security, #identity, #privacy, #policy, #law for places you've probably heard of. Ambivalent on the Oxford Comma, but death on the Grocer’s Apostrophe.

Slowly realizing I might actually be retired.

Posts are on a six month autodelete. I can be way chattier than the remaining posts suggest.

There’s a lie we tell talented people: that craft wins. That mastery speaks for itself. That building something great is enough. That a good product will find its audience.

It won’t.

Happy Juneteenth!
If you are in the#Seattle orbit and feel like doing something, there is an event every year in Jimi Hendrix park - just outside the Northwest African American Museum. There will be food trucks, vendors, and live music starting at 10 AM.

NAAM — Juneteenth 2025 at NAAM

Juneteenth is more than a day of remembrance—it is a declaration of Black joy as resistance. At NAAM, we honor this truth with this year’s program, Juneteenth: A Movement for Joy.

This might be a second cup of coffee morning. While I try to keep it to just one (my intake had gotten really out of hand for a while), sometimes one isn't going to be enough.
I keep checking and my coffee cup keeps being empty :blobcat_furiousconfused:
Had a very short, very weird dream this morning. I dreamed my phone rang, I groggily answered it, and a voice asked me if I was $FULLNAME. I said "yes" and then the call ended. Apparently my brain concocted a "Say Yes" scam and I fell for it. Now I'm not sure what it intends to do with it.

Was reading the Ars article on the ASUS router backdoor, and it either got hit with the editing stick, or it's just terribly written.

The call to action for any potentially affected device is missing. How about a link to the FAQ with how to check the setting? Is having SSH off sufficient? Are all models affected, or just some? Other than riling people up and giving credit to a few firms, what's the takeaway here?

Thousands of Asus routers are being hit with stealthy, persistent backdoors

Backdoor giving full administrative control can survive reboots and firmware updates.

A few months ago, foolishly I attempted to transport my LEGO Orient Express train set set while it was still affixed to the tracks. I almost made it, but it, uh, had a rapid unscheduled disassembly when I dropped it and it hit the floor. I was in a hurry at the time, I was furious, so I just gathered up the pieces and put it away.

Today, I gathered them up with the instructions and put it back together. There are a few missing pieces, which I will just add to a future order. I might find them in the interim or I might not, but I'd rather just get them and have a few extras.

Me: This browser's tabs are acting weird and not letting me switch them. I wonder if the latest update is bad.

Also me: Oh, I was resting my hand on the ctrl key. Now everything works as expected.

Not good. Not at all.

CFBP Quietly Kills Rule to Shield Americans From Data Brokers

“By withdrawing the CFPB’s data broker rulemaking, the Trump administration is ensuring that Americans will continue to be bombarded by scam texts, calls and emails," says Sean Vitka, executive director of Demand Progress.
