Yes heat pumps do work in very old buildings.

Today I visited Trinity College Oxford at the University of Oxford which is getting a ground source heat pump fitted by Rendesco right now.

It will heat its grade II listed Jackson Building, which houses common rooms, teaching rooms and student bedrooms.
