The other time me and my dad took some photos of the ISS is already 10 years ago (July 2016). This might be a nice moment to re-post that (given that I posted that on Twitter, back in the day, and thus would otherwise probably be lost in the mists of time/the internet...). Different set-up, different location of the ISS in the sky, different goal (capture some detail versus capture transit), fun regardless!

Had some fun taking pictures with my dad of the ISS transit in front of the Moon tonight. (The ISS being the only satellite that still makes me happy when I can actually see it with my own eyes---I'd rather not see any satellite swarms.) Thanks to @pfsmet for pointing out that I could take these photos from the comfort of my garden in Lebbeke tonight! (Details of the photos at the end of the alt text) #ISS
Some pictures of the aurora / northern lights above Belgium around 23h-23h30. Seems like I was just too late for the most impressive part, but it was very impressive show nonetheless! (The most impressive picture aurora-wise was sadly when I hadn't yet taken my tripod yet) #northernLights #Aurora #AuroraBorealis #Belgium
Friends in Belgium and Western Europe: Aurora is visible above Belgium!
Somewhat annoyingly & ironically, the first victim of my policy of blocking entire IP ranges of (cloud) providers that I find scraping my website without regard for robots.txt turns out to be my own website: Let's Encrypt uses (multiple, different) cloud IPs for its HTTPS challenges... And because they no longer mail notifications for certificate expiry I also didn't notice it immediately either. Deep sigh...
Saw the Fediverse described as where elder millennial, Gen X and boomers go to retire from the internet, and immediately felt the peace that passes all understanding wash over me. None of us have to struggle any longer. We completed our time.

EU citizens, if you want in while you can, there's a EU citizen's petition for the EU to ban "conversion therapy" (this is as ominous as it sounds) of LGBTQs, with 7 days left to sign.

It will not make the threshold, but might be able to rack up a few more country thresholdsโ€” I'm happy to note Spain just hit it. Belgium and The Netherlands are the next best bets as they're over 65%; If you know queer-friendly folks in those countries, maybe a good time to forward this:

Hello EU people:

There is an EU citizen petition to ban the use of "conversion therapy" on LGBTQ+ folks (i.e., trying to de-LGBTQ usโ€” a process often described as "torture"). If you're interested, you can sign it here:

https://eci.ec.europa.eu/043/public/#/screen/home

Please especially take note if you are a national of Spain, Slovenia, Belgium, or the Netherlands; the petition needs about 5x as many votes as it has now, but also needs to hit a threshold in four additional countries, and those are the four closest.

The title of one of the final episodes of Babylon 5 keeps going through my head today: 'And all my dreams, torn asunder'... Sigh...
What an incredible show, aurora borealis visible from Lebbeke, Belgium. Never thought I'd see it, let alone from my back yard. Once in a lifetime experience... While the colours and fine details weren't visible with the naked eye, the banded structure definitely was. #Aurora #AuroraBorealis #Belgium #NorthernLights
