Hello EU people:

There is an EU citizen petition to ban the use of "conversion therapy" on LGBTQ+ folks (i.e., trying to de-LGBTQ us— a process often described as "torture"). If you're interested, you can sign it here:

Please especially take note if you are a national of Spain, Slovenia, Belgium, or the Netherlands; the petition needs about 5x as many votes as it has now, but also needs to hit a threshold in four additional countries, and those are the four closest.

In the time since I linked the petition* above, Ireland has gone from under 50% to above the threshold! Spain is also now getting very close.

The petition is up overall 26,000 votes in the last ten days. I don't know whether it can hit a million by May, but turning more countries green definitely sounds viable.

* The petition asks the EU to ban pseudo-psychological practices purporting to "convert" gay and trans people to straights. Yes, that's a thing, and it's cruel.

EU citizens, if you want in while you can, there's a EU citizen's petition for the EU to ban "conversion therapy" (this is as ominous as it sounds) of LGBTQs, with 7 days left to sign.

It will not make the threshold, but might be able to rack up a few more country thresholds— I'm happy to note Spain just hit it. Belgium and The Netherlands are the next best bets as they're over 65%; If you know queer-friendly folks in those countries, maybe a good time to forward this:

Britain proclaimed the legal non-existence of trans people in the last month with a court decision; in the US, Texas did so last night, with a bill passed in its House of Representatives. There is a global effort to unexist trans people. If nothing else, if the EU wants to show that it's different— that it's not a part of this— it seems like a pretty direct way to say so would be this citizen's initiative against attempting to unexist individual trans people via torture.

Okay big news on the EU citizen petition to ban the use of "conversion therapy" (IE "curing" or perhaps "torturing into submission") on LGBTQs—

BE, NL and SI came through and last night the initiative *met* the 7 countries goal! It needs 330,000 more signatures before the 17th to pass, which sounds rough, but it's got *420,887* in just 5 days, so things are actually on a good pace. This will at least be really close, and this could happen!

By the way, since I know there's a lot of Germans on Mastodon:

The need right now on the EU citizen petition against anti-LGBTQ "conversion therapy" ( https://mastodon.social/@mcc/114512352419261539 ) is raw votes from anywhere. BUT as it happens Germany's currently the closest %-wise to being the 8th country to endorse the petition!

15.5k DE votes would turn Germany green on this map, and send a pro-LGBTQ message to German lawmakers¹:

It is 7 AM CEST. The EU citizen initiative calling for a ban on "conversion therapy" (here meaning, pseudoscientific attempts to "cure" LGBTQs) is less than 250,000 votes from success. This is astounding, the votes have like, *tripled* in a week.

The page says voting ends "May 17", and I wish I knew if that meant "at midnight tonight" or "midnight tomorrow" or what. Uh. Do you know

@mcc I can't believe something so disgusting, not to mention completely unscientific and false, is being done in the twenty-first century! Naturally, I boosted this.

@dandylover1 I don't have any information about to what extent it is happening in Europe today. When we banned it in California there were people offering it as parts of normal psychiatric services (when I lived in CA we didn't ban it proper, just outlawed it being done by anyone who is licensed as or advertising themselves as offering health services)

@mcc Signed, but for the Netherlands it's a pain in the ass. Like 10 steps, jump to Dutch ID app, need to scan ID with NFC, multiple redirects back to browser.

I wonder if it's easier for other countries?

Admittedly I've got Firefox with NoScript set as my default browser making it even harder.

@aerique @mcc For Slovenia (with smartcard national id card) it's: select country, check both checkboxes, click the e-id button, select country again, redirected to our si-pass system, where I have the choices of "Id card with smartcard reader" and "Id card with mobile app", clicking the first I get the browser's select certificate dialog box (assuming my id card is inserted in the reader already), then I need to enter my PIN and it's done (not too different from using any national service that needs e-id sign in).

@aerique @mcc It’s easier here in Denmark, and we already use the system on a more or less daily basis (though the initial setup can be a pain).

@aerique @mcc Firefox on Android with German eID and the AusweisApp (actually FOSS) was surprisingly easy to use here. It also does the redirects but they all worked, even jumping in and out of the app.

@aerique @mcc I tried with my Dutch DigiD but it seems to expect me to have registered a Dutch ID (I think?) and I don’t have one as I’m not a Dutch citizen 😔 is there something I’m missing?

@Frantasaur @aerique I assume it wants you to vote with whatever country you are a citizen/national of. Incidentally, Ireland is also on the "votes unusually helpful" list.

@Frantasaur @mcc @aerique Yeah, I was able to give my UK address as an Irish citizen. (I don't know whether they'd succeed at contacting me since the form asks for country of residence, offers EU countries or "Other...", and then never actually provides a way to specify exactly which one ...)

@aerique @mcc Germany just asks for full name and home address, that's literally it. For once our bad digitalization had a benefit

@aerique @mcc Netherlands here, worked fine through DigID for me, no NFC stuff required (using Firefox with javascript enabled)

@aerique @mcc I had the same (also NL, FireFox and noscript 🤟 ), but even after enabling scripts I had to repeat the process a couple of times before it finally worked, as if some remnant from a previous time were causing conflicts.

@aerique @mcc I (Dutch) could choose for the manual form, no ID
