If you've been waiting for full-text #search on #Mastodon, please go to #TootFinder and sign in. The more, the merrier.

Thanks to @buercher for building it.

It's opt-in, not opt-out. It respects Mastodon culture and doesn't index accounts that don't sign in.

That means the index might be small if we don't spread the word.

That should help me get off that website.

Amazing news out of Europe. Treating the “forever chemical” family of PFAS as the public health menace it is. We need the US EPA to stop playing with our people’s health and do the same.

EU considers ban on 'forever chemicals', urges search for alternatives

The European Union on Tuesday started to consider a proposal to ban widely used, potentially harmful substances known as PFAS or forever chemicals in what could become the bloc's most extensive piece of regulation of the chemical industry.

In a paper published today in Environmental Research Letters, Manon Berger, Lester Kwiatkowski, Laurent Bopp, and I used a high-resolution ocean biogeochemical model (NEMO-PISCES) to examine the efficacy and efficiency of #kelp-based ocean CO₂ removal (#CDR). 1/n

Hey climate peeps, is there a good update to this IPCC AR4 figure showing greenhouse gases from the EPICA ice cores?

Edit 2023-02-05: @ElenLeFoll has done a great video on using Debirdify. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PMzB2h2noEA

Edit: Twitter has blocked Movetodon. Try one of the other services below.

Given that twitter is going to start charging for api usage next week, but has neglected to give anyone any info about rates, I recommend running https://www.movetodon.org/ one last time while you still can.

None of the migration tools will work after the 8th (give or take some timezones).

Here’s a list of similar services operating as of 2023-02-04

Debirdify https://debirdify.pruvisto.org
Fedifinder https://fedifinder.glitch.me
Twitodon https://twitodon.com
Mastodon Flock https://mastodon-flock.vercel.app

Flock is the easiest to use, despite the hilarious Windows 95 UI. It actually adds the follows to Mastodon, the others export a CSV file which you can import in the import/export section of your Mastodon preferences.

Twitodon found far fewer acounts when I used it (20 vs. 112). I don't recommend it.

Fedifinder scans lists as well. It also will recommend a Mastodon host to use based on where your friends are. (You can use it before you have a Mastodon account.)

Debirdify will search people who follow you as well. And also tells you which services it thinks you should use. Can also read lists, and gives a very long summary. But I get very confused as to what I'm exporting if I also do lists. Basically, if you want to import lists, do them first, they include everyone you follow. Also, don't freak if it just sits there for a while doing nothing--it will refresh the screen eventually (with great charts). But do double check and make sure there isn't an error in there about rate limits--it's hard to spot.

Kinda funny how the American left never built the think-tank infrastructure the right did because they thought academia took care of that but then the right realized they controlled 22 state uni systems and did the Somali pirate "I'm the captain now" meme.

DeSantis Takes On the Education Establishment, and Builds His Brand

A proposal by Gov. Ron DeSantis of Florida to overhaul higher education would mandate courses in Western civilization, eliminate diversity programs and reduce the protections of tenure.
