The fact that swatting exists—that someone in a place like the US can call the cops, falsely report a fake violent crime, and prompt the police to attack a random person with overwhelming violence—is a crushing indictment of policing.
And yet I don’t think I have ever encountered anyone, in public discourse about swatting, bring this up.
It’s always “what a tragedy” and “filing false police reports is a crime” and never “why did the state build a system that can be hijacked to kill random people like this”.
