Choosing a limited best seems almost meaningless when the five and a half operatic experiences i've reished in the run-up to Christmas (nothing seasonal) alone deserve a place in the sun. But in a year which has seen Arts Council devastation versus brilliant business as usual where possible, English National Opera â faced with âManchester or dieâ â needs the first shout-out for doing everything the moneygivers want it to.

Jason CartyItâs Christmas Eve so Iâm going to tell a nice story. 20 years ago I was working a late shift till after midnight in the emergency department of a childrenâs hospital. At about 10pm, this guy rocks up delivering bag after bag of brand new toys. Each bag is the size of a bin liner and they are all fresh from Smyths Toys. All in all I recall about 14-16 of these bags being deposited and they were all from Colin Farrell. So, in my mind, from that point on, Colin Farrell is a top man.
