I’m a tech enthusiast who has been using  products since the late 80's. Although I started my career as a technical photographer, I am now providing 1:1 support for regular people, photographers & small business owners who need help with their tech needs.

What I enjoy most about my work is the opportunity to help people become more technologically literate & to simplify their digital lives.

I’ve lots of experience & knowledge to share & keen to help others navigate the digital landscape…

@mike_vlasman The ads on Apple News are ugly, but they’re not awful in nearly the same way as what @Gruber discovered for sites on the open web.

I stopped using websites in favor of Apple News everywhere I could) around 5 years ago, even though I use 1Blocker.

I gave up reading @sixcolors fora couple of years, rather than break my new rule, when they burned their Apple News feed.

@pheonix @daringfireball @gruber
@Gruber (if I’m not mistaken) has complained about the ads in Apple News.
Perhaps he now realises that Apple News is the proverbial glass of ice water in hell.
@gruber waddyamean nothing happened in August
@imyke Indeed. I couldn’t wait to get an in person look at these and it turns out I didn’t have to.

@gruber what do you think if Apple were to allow twin watch faces.

Face 1 - a dress face
Face 2 - a utility face

Face 2 would be activated by the finger tap gesture

My reasoning is.

I prefer the look of a beautiful face for always on/glancing at the time.

I miss complications.

The widget stack is not very useful.

@atpfm Can we get some discussion of the band of features where Siri has always stood above everything else.

Perhaps I’m unique. I don’t disagree with most of the rhetoric, but it’s a narrow view.

I’ve personally used Siri for years to do things that are only now becoming possible in limited ways with other assistants.

Without Siri I’d long ago have needed to employ a VA

@9to5Mac Not say someone shouldn’t buy a new iPhone if they can afford one, but for someone who is still using one of these, their needs are clearly satisfied by this 7yo iPhone

That means they could remain satisfied for 2-3 more years as security updates continue and most apps remain compatible.

They can still get a new battery and should do so if it’s needed.

@troi @heidilifeldman It’s true, if they’re fast enough, that they can interrupt this, but at least the message goes out.

@troi @heidilifeldman In daily life though it’s far safer to use FaceID than not.

You can set up a ‘Siri unlock’ shortcut that shuts down the iPhone.

Make sure to turn off ‘unlock with mask’ so they can’t cover your mouth and you can speak the magic words.

You can even add a step that sends a preformatted message with current location to multiple friends in the event that you’re forced to use this.

@troi @heidilifeldman Turning off biometrics means you’ll need to type your pin anytime you want to get into your phone and you could easily reveal your pin to a camera or other observer..
