Mansplaining trains women to limit and doubt themselves at the same time that it "exercises men’s unsupported overconfidence -Rebecca Solnit

Excellent article on mansplaining by historian Charlotte Lydia Riley that resonates in every field.

Reflection – Male historians explain things to me

Charlotte Riley explores the patriarchal cultures of expertise, evaluation, and promotion that deform the work of historians today. Gendered patterns of harassment and bullying represent one extreme of more pervasive forms including interpersonal interactions within the conference, seminar room or lecture theatre, and department meeting, conventions of citation and acknowledgement, and decisions about research funding, appointments, and promotion. Scholarly or pedagogic styles are intensely gendered, in ways that reward some – usually white men – and disadvantage others. The cliched protest ‘not all men’ obfuscates the distinctions between individual responsibility and structural privileges from which all men derive benefit. Expertise, authority, professionalism – those identities to which historians lay claim and on which working lives rely – are embedded in deep-rooted cultures of masculinity

My take:

Returning Valencia Street center bike lane to its “historic” iteration as a sanctioned double parking lane is not an option.

The huge increase in families, kids, and older people biking/scootering on Valencia has proven the need for a safe path across town.

It’s a wide street. Let’s join together to make this work.

— Can SFMTA adjust the ratio of parking spots to loading zones?

— Merchants need to decide — maybe on a block-by-block basis — whether they want parklets or car parking.

— Can delivery apps rent vacant storefronts as hubs for e-delivery bikes? You can park a lot more bikes than cars in front of restaurants. And reduce unsafe double parking.

— More bike parking is needed on every block. The new racks at the DeYoung offer a slim, practical design.

Opinion: The Valencia Street center bike lane was a mistake and has to go - 48 hills

It's unsafe for cyclists, bad for small business, and shows the need for SFMTA reform.

@mbonsma that’s fantastic!

Maybe not quite in the same league but I shared your original post with our jigsaw puzzle exchange Slack channel at work :)

Am I dreaming or did Discover Freaking Magazine pick up our puzzle paper

Mathematical Solution Found For Jigsaw Problem We've All Faced

How big a table do you need for all the pieces in an unassembled jigsaw?

@hramrach @scalzi so theoretically you could have more than one backup?
@gcvsa I would consider speed delimiters if they are simultaneously implemented for cars and trucks
We can't put in protected bike lanes, our roads are too narrow. #bikelanes #bicycles #CarsRuinCities
@scalzi if you lose the original and need the backup, can you get a backup backup at that point? Or just buy two new ones and start over?
