For the sleepless, hunted by worries or hurts, it is such a strange feeling when early in the morning, before dawn, birds start singing. How hard nature tries to just go on as if normal, with no worry in the world, as it has always done, no matter how badly we humans have screwed this planet up.
Last week I went snowboarding in Zell am See, Austria, which is always a spectacular experience. However, this year got me worried. The first thing I noticed was, the lake was not frozen as usual. The pistes were warmer than I have ever experienced. I went to the top of Schmittenhöhe, and I kid you not: I saw butterflies. Your read that right: Newly hatched butterflies at 2000 meters in february. It felt surreal.
If climate change is a hoax, I can report, the butterflies are in on it.

A suggestion to NATO: swap Hungary and Turkey for Sweden and Finland.
Happy Women in Science Day!

This is by far the most cogent explanation of wtf is going on in the House that I’ve read to date.

Essentially, the rebels expect to govern as a vital coalition partner to the GOP, with veto power over all House business. Lots of context about underlying political alliances, so much more useful than another ~take.

Painful to follow the debate on sinking #forest #carbon #sinks in #Finland. Main position: cut the old forest &plant new!

#Forests are much more than C sinks, they are life itself. They've evolved and adapted just like you and me. They belong.

They are home to many. You destroy forest, you destroy them. Significant portion of 🌳goes to #bioenergy, releasing C back to atmosphere.

If you really want to mitigate #climate, start by cutting down #consumption & #emissions.

Boreal forests turn into a carbon sink within 10 years of clearcutting | slu.se

Tree growth determines the forest carbon balance at the landscape level in northern managed forests. Soil carbon release through decomposition is comparatively less important, and a clearcut starts...

“Much of the moral panic over “cancel culture” – which animated Musk to buy Twitter in the first place – is a reaction to the fact that traditionally marginalized groups gained technological means to affect the political debate.” https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2022/dec/21/elon-musk-liberal-twitter-plans-benevolent
Elon Musk was never a liberal, and his plans for Twitter were never benevolent

Tech barons’ lip-service to democracy and pluralism was always conditional on preserving their own positions at the top

Vandals destroy 30 000 year old cave art of #Koonalda Cave, a sacred site of the Mirning, on Nullabor Plain in South #Australia.

The damage done to the art is irreversible. This follows the destruction of the 46 000 year old site at the #JuukanGorge by mining company Rio Tinto in 2020.

The destruction of ancient sites is but one of the many forms of #racism the indigenous Australians are subjected to.

I feel like crying.
