Many people think GenerativeAI is a public problem — but what kind of problem, for what kind of public, & how is the problem made?

In a new piece, I trace these questions across (1) charismatic figures, (2) failure indexes, (3) journalistic practices.

As I read this, I tried replacing “scientist” with “journalist,” and the argument largely still works…

Artificial intelligence and illusions of understanding in scientific research - Nature

The proliferation of artificial intelligence tools in scientific research risks creating illusions of understanding, where scientists believe they understand more about the world than they actually do.

To Reckon with Generative AI, Make It a Public Problem

Recasting generative artificial intelligence as a “public problem” offers new avenues for action, Mike Ananny writes.

Issues in Science and Technology

Have questions about the law & Generative AI, like:

*** can I remove my personal data from a training dataset?

*** when I use a product like ChatGPT, can they collect my data?

*** do I own outputs of GenAI prompts?

The legal team of the Knowing Machines Project [ https://knowingmachines.org/ ] has answers & relevant case law.

Check it out, share it, use it for teaching!

Pulled into darkness, turning toward the light is our responsibility

We must somehow discover anew in ourselves what it means to hold sacred the human being in front of us.

The example is a great process to think & teach with.

Using GPT-4 for content moderation

We use GPT-4 for content policy development and content moderation decisions, enabling more consistent labeling, a faster feedback loop for policy refinement, and less involvement from human moderators.

New paper!

What links a Grindr recommendation, a stock price collapse, & racist facial detection? They're all algorithmic errors that *could* be seen as public problems.
