I'm a recovering Alaska journalist who is addicted to sled dogs, long wanders in the woods, and coffee.

I don't think Heather is on Mastodon yet to tag, but this quote is on fire:

“I don’t really care about journalism, the industry that has a product for sale. That’s not what I care about saving or fixing. I care about journalism, a service to the public that requires quality news and information in order to navigate their lives. To me, that’s the only real journalism.”

Ron DeSantis, the big 2A supporter who wants permitless carry in the state, doesn't want guns at his events and he's frightened that his supporters are going to find out.

The CEO-to-worker pay gap at America’s largest public companies is now 399-to-1.

In 1965, the ratio was 20-to-1.

Trickle-down economics was always a sham.

Fairbanks area into super strong temperature inversion territory Wednesday morning: at 7am Fort Wainwright-13F (-25.0C) while Cleary Summit up to 28F (-2.2C), for a 41F (22.8C) range. #akwx @anisian @CarrieNash @Climatologist49
The power of no clouds in mid-winter: Fairbanks airport temperature has dropped 23F (-13C) in less 5 hours Monday morning after hardly changing all weekend. There's no weather front or airmass change at all. Only difference is blanket of clouds went "poof" and now the air right above the snowpack is rapidly losing heat to outer space and cold air is draining toward lower elevations like the Tanana River. #akwx #winter @[email protected] @Climatologist49

Solar noon in Fairbanks occurs only 3 minutes after the winter solstice today (12:50 p.m. vs 12:47 p.m.). In theory, the two events are this close in time once every 400 or so years. @AlaskaWx
I walked outside about 12:30 a.m. to let the dogs pee and it was only minus 15. Still saw minus 40 in the flats by Little Chena River this morning. Living on a hill has definite benefits.

In places with no mining or industry in Alaska's Brooks Range, streams run orange. Water is too acidic to drink. It curdles powdered milk.

Jim Magdanz first altered me to this phenom. Here, Emily Schwing writes that it is likely caused by degrading permafrost

Alaska’s Arctic waterways are turning orange, threatening drinking water

Scientists think climate change may be the culprit.

Mid-day Monday temperatures in eastern mainland Alaska and the Yukon Territory. Two days before winter solstice and in the North, the power of the sun is none™️. #akwx #ytwx @Climatologist49 @[email protected] @evaholland
