The December and early January cold snap across Alaska and northwest Canada was impressive and may well turn out to be one of the coldest multi-week events of the 21st century. Lots of details in the latest post from the Alaska and Arctic Climate newsletter. @Climatologist49

Seems unimportant in this moment, but if keeping up with environmental conditions in the North can bring you a calmer few minutes, here's an update on the status of the Arctic and Alaska and vicinity snowpack as of mid-January. @Climatologist49

Alaska and vicinity snowpack snow water equivalent as of mid-January is quite low relative to the 1991-2020 median over much of Southcentral and west/southwest Alaska. Exceptions though in the Kuskokwim delta and upper Bristol Bay. Southern Yukon Territory and northern British Columbia well above normal snowpack for this point in the season.
