dude. *dude*. dude this scam is like a decade old. Get out of here. In all seriousness, heads up to fellow fedi admins because I just got this dm out of the blue, and I'm sure this isn't the only one of these going around. The purpose of this post is not to expose the specific account but rather the pattern. (📎4)
If you would like to reference another post in your own, there are a few ways:
1. in the web client, copy the link to the post. You can right-click on the time/date in the post ("2h", "January 1", etc.) and copy the link. If you are using a different client/app, try the "share" option.
Then paste the link in your own post. When someone clicks on/taps it, it will open in a web browser or in their client, depending on what they're using.
2. Make a reply to the post, but delete the original poster's handle that is automatically inserted. It will look like a normal post in the feed, but when selected, it will show the original post over it, like a regular reply. You will have to boost your own post in order to make it show up in other people's feeds.
Quick note: Mastodon 4.5 is out and brings new features including quote posts (https://blog.joinmastodon.org/2025/11/mastodon-4.5).
The current version of Hometown, the fork flipping.rocks runs, is based off an earlier version of Mastodon. Currently, you can't quote posts here, and your posts cannot be quoted (https://docs.joinmastodon.org/user/quote-posts/#faq-old-posts). I'm not sure if they'll be added in the future.
So, if you're confused about everything looking the same and no new features: that is normal, everything is fine!

Since it's going around again: if you get a mention/message from an account with a "Mastodon support" profile pic/username, saying you need to "verify your account" or whatever, IT IS A SCAM.
There's only one way to verify your account: putting a special link to your profile page on your website. It does not cost any money. (More: https://fedi.tips/how-do-i-verify-my-account/)
Do not click any links or scan any QR code they send you. Please report it! Even if it's in someone else's replies and not mentioning you.
⚠️ If you see a post or DM saying "your account is currently suspended for verification purposes", do NOT click on the link. It is a scam.
Fediverse servers do not ask people to verify their identity. There is an optional self-verification system, but that's just for those who want to use it. No one is ever asked to do it.
If you are in ANY doubt about ANY official-looking message, contact your own server's admin directly using their public email address on your server's website's "About" page.
Rock flippers, I have way more important stuff I should be asking, but this has been weighing on me for literally months.
Are we…"goblincore"? <https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Goblincore>
I think we might be, and it would be nice to add to our short description to help people get a better idea of what the server is like. What do you think?
