@dangillmor You people are dooming us to a Trump win in November.

Unsurprisingly, the current status of the #internetarchive case has reached "libraries are bad, actually" in court. It was always a bad idea to litigate library lending, and this may just set precedent to tear down the whole thing.

Second Circuit Says Libraries Disincentivize Authors To Write Books By Lending Them For Free

What would you think if an author told you they would have written a book, but they wouldn’t bother because it would be available to be borrowed for free from a library? You’d probably think they w…

"The smart way to keep people passive and obedient is to strictly limit the spectrum of acceptable opinion, but allow very lively debate within that spectrum – even encourage the more critical and dissident views. That gives people the sense that there’s free thinking going on, while all the time the presuppositions of the system are being reinforced by the limits put on the range of the debate."

"Demoralized" is a good way of describing the American public.

They have little experience with a functional national government and have ceased to expect it.

Their leaders rarely show any willingness to deal with important issues, preferring to tilt at windmills over TikTok or whatever. Stuff just randomly happens because the SCOTUS said so or because lobbyists bribed Congress. Oh, and Trump got away with crimes again because he's rich and they're not.

And the media are willfully useless.

Karma, etc.
The irony is not lost on me that the Internet Archive went out of its way to acquire the physical versions of millions of books and loan them out carefully and in a limited way, and is facing a near-extinction-level event over it, while for-profit and VC-backed companies are just stealing people’s content and making up excuses to validate the bad behavior.
Any country that makes protecting your health or being poor a crime is not a real democracy.

"'It’s despicable but not shocking that 62 Democrats joined Republicans to refute the Gaza death toll,' one Democratic staffer told The Intercept. 'Democratic leadership should be ashamed for refusing to take a stand and call out the blatant anti-Palestinian racism and genocide denial in our party.'"
