Jevons paradox describes the phenomenon where increased efficiency in the use of a resource actually leads to a greater overall consumption of that resource rather than a decrease. This counterintuitive concept, first identified by William Stanley Jevons in 1865, suggests that technological advancements aimed at improving efficiency can, paradoxically, increase resource use due to increased demand spurred by lower costs.

And, yet, they continue trying to be done with us.

Inside OpenAI’s Rocky Path to GPT-5

OpenAI made waves across the industry in December when it published the results from its tests of artificial intelligence that performs better on tasks when it gets more time and computing power to process them. The results implied ChatGPT customers were about to be blown away by what the new AI ...

The Information

"Potentially suggests that the company is getting ready to ship a product that could pose an existential threat to humanity, as the AI firm doesn't seem to have a firm grasp or control over the model."

Sam Altman is afraid of OpenAI's GPT-5 creation β€” "The Manhattan Project feels very fast, like there are no adults in the room"

"What have we done?" OpenAI CEO raises alarm and concern over the company's soon-to-launch AI model, which is rapidly outpacing oversight.

The AI hype has reached slapstick level comedy while they seem to be attempting to cause hysteria such as with "The War of the Worlds." That 1938 radio drama caused many to think it was reporting a real Marsian attack.

"[Altman] admitted that AI was advancing and scaling rapidly, potentially outpacing the oversights put in place to prevent the technology from spiraling out of control. 'It feels like there are no adults in the room.'"

Now, think of the gap that's going to manifest itself in two to seven years out and what that will do to pay for those already here. It's known as supply and demand. There's going to be a huge steaming pile to clean up and replace with working software and far fewer available.

"Let that sink in." 🚰

AI's impact on the software development rarely track what's going on behind us. What? Yeah, the kids who strongly buy into the AI hype that software developers and most other IT related jobs are going the way of the baby seals are actively not entering CS degree programs and computing in general. This is a trend that has impacted the previous academic year and the one that's about to begin, not to mention those who are switching majors partway in.

@spingee @mikaellundin I feel good about that, but financially, it was one of the worst decisions of my career. I earn roughly $1,000 to $2,000 per year (and only 2 years at that after 5 years invested), and I can't write my own books. My idea was to write my own series of books, but Pearson pitched the signature series to me instead. So, here we are.
@spingee @mikaellundin You know, being a series editor has engulfed my authoring and any time that could be used for that. I took one month on a writer's retreat at Solana Beach 1.5 years ago and did nothing else but write, eat, and sleep. I wrote the first three chapters and haven't had a moment since. But I've moved another 5 books to production, and at least 3 of those have been published since. Susanne Kaiser's will be published soon. Alex Lawrence's book is very close to production ready.

@mikaellundin So, I don't understand F#, but I used F# anyway to deliver a system. That system is really horrible, and you hate it. Yet, it's not my problem. The fault is with F# because I didn't understand F#. Cool, and thanks for clarifying!
