@jsnell re your personalization update issue: I had the same problem on my m1 air, but trying to go from the public beta of sequoia to the final release. What solved it for me is turning off find my mac and installing the update.
I've also heard you could try signing in/out of icloud or enabling/disabling filevault.

My immediate thought on checking out Threads is that within 24 hours a lot of the people I miss from Twitter are already on there, and while I don’t like the Threads algorithmic feed, and probably won’t use the app directly very much, I can’t wait for them to federate so I can follow and interact with all those people from my preferred client (Ivory).
And I hope the purist Fediverse scolds don’t end up breaking Mastodon in an effort to stop that from happening.

New web services are being built to a self-defeatingly low UX and performance standard, and existing experiences are now pervasively re-developed on unspeakably slow, JS-taxed stacks. At a business level, this is a disaster, raising the question: why are new teams buying into stacks that have failed so often before?
Step 1. Kill the most popular class of clients of an API, one of the few that could afford to pay money for access.
Step 2. Start charging for the API.
