das ist ja mal ein Temperaturverlauf
#Wolkenlos #Winter

PS:

:D

That’s way too many keys for a Saturday evening project, I already started in the morning disassembling the keyboard and bleaching it outside in the sunny weather. But it took all night to clean each single key and put it back with the spring underneath. 🤷‍♂️ 😓
Now we have an even shade of gray again.

… last picture of the working C16 with the dedicated 1551-Floppy drive attached to it,
also heat sink has been added to CPU and the TED-chip because I did not add the sheet metal shield again.
I still have a bunch of thermal pictures where I found out that the PLA is faulty because it was able heating the whole house :) 🔥

… now that it’s working, why not upgrading it from 16kilobyte to 64KB of Memory!?
so out with the old, in with the new :)
but first I made an intermediate step to only change it to 32KB, because to make the whole thing work it needs two bodge-wires added, so I tested it after adding the first wire :)
the 74 IC on the left had to be removed because the change to be made is in the middle under that IC!

This happened between Tuesday and Saturday. 🤷🏻‍♀️

… after some scoping it turned out the CPU wasn’t working, after replacing it, and also placing a Diag-ROM into the socket the computer showed signs of life.
with the regular Kernal-ROM still no Keyboard life, that’s because the PLA did noch select the appropriate IC to read from the keyboard, everything else seemed to work.
The PLA has been replaced by a modern part, what I already had in stock.

A new toy showed up at my door step the other day,
but it did not work also did not come with an original PSU so I had to use an alternative one, and that’s probably the issue the fuse was blown as new PSUs have center positive connectors, 40 year old computer has it center negative 🤷
an adapter has been built, but no luck of getting an operational C16, just a black screen!

Next Commodore retro experiment, in a C64 the VIC-2 graphic chip is getting real hot without heatsink, that’s why I added one, but before that I added a temp sensor under the IC. It’s a 18B20 1-wire connected to a raspberry-pi. It probably needs more investigation, so far I can see with the case closed it’s ~5° warmer, also the sensor is under the IC the heatsink on top.
The 2nd curve isn’t very riveting just similar to charging a battery or capacitor

How it started … how’s it going
1986 …………… 2024
so, one of the original Rom ICs got pretty hot, almost as hot as the CPU, it’s still working but probably not for long any more, that’s why I replaced it with a proper EProm, found one with 1985 datecode in my storage so it matches the Computer 😀
but it needed this mess of an adapter stack to go from 24 pin to 28 pin 🤷🏻‍♀️
the thermal pics show that the new Eprom is not visible in the thermal cam any more, also draws less current, about 50mA less.

Oops, found that one in my storage, wasn’t working any more so i checked it with the oscilloscope and there was no frequency to make it going, so I started replacing the little IC (pic2) and it’s socket to a new proper one, and since then it’s working again and showing it’s blue screen of life, so the IC is the same only the socket is new! 🤷‍♂️
also took some thermal pics while it was disassembled, named and labeled to know what they are 🤔 😂
