@MEActNOW ah the good old days: single-digit-millions judgements
@robpike there is a system at work where the password expires every 82 days. It's like they said '3 months' but then set it to '100 days' so people would have a grace period; but then they did the opposite of that. They're also jerks about resetting expired passwords.
@yurnidiot saw a low flying bald eagle getting hassled by a gull once, while kayaking. After a bit of swooping, the eagle flew off with a talon full of gull. It didn't need an the wind up.

I feel like it's gotten worse. If Covfefe happened today ... it'd end up in some proposal as the new name for Space Force... or Pennsylvania.

... OK now I'm freaking myself out because. Why else would he say anything about changing the name if there weren't a plan... always accuse others of what you will do next.

Maaan that state is gonna get renamed if we don't get this right. Count on it.

There’s a lot to chew on in this short article (ht @ajsadauskas):
https://www.bbc.com/worklife/article/20240214-ai-recruiting-hiring-software-bias-discrimination

“An AI resume screener…trained on CVs of employees already at the firm” gave candidates extra marks if they listed male-associated sports, and downgraded female-associated sports.

Bias like this is enraging, but completely unsurprising to anybody who knows half a thing about how machine learning works. Which apparently doesn’t include a lot of execs and HR folks.

AI hiring tools may be filtering out the best job applicants

As firms increasingly rely on artificial intelligence-driven hiring platforms, many highly qualified candidates are finding themselves on the cutting room floor.

@MissingThePt they forgot to include the interest 😂

@wilpercy @Shufei @heidilifeldman getting prison out of a civil trial basically requires that the dependent perform a felony in the courtroom... And then there'd have to be a criminal trial.

But don't worry! All the other trials are criminal, and he won't plead out to a misdemeanor and parole like his codefendants because he'd rather roll the dice on being able to self-pardon.

@heidilifeldman there's a Terry Pratchett quote of course... From 'Going Postal' about how white collar crime kills.
@kcoyle it's a cat nose!

@paulc @futurebird @stveje some of that is that a heck of a lot of America is basically unlivable if you can't drive... And that's a gnarly thing to say: get thee to The Villages because our infrastructure is hostile. You can indeed compensate with money, or competence, but these are in short supply.

But yeah, getting the elderly away from the drivers seat BEFORE they start complaining that it's unsafe to drive at night or in rain because they can't see... It's critical for everybody's safety.
