You know those 'privacy is not data protection' posts that always do the rounds on Data Protection Day? This year they prompted me to write something of my own, to try to explain why the distinction matters to those of us working in this area and, I would argue, everyone else as well! Happy Data Protection Day (or why absolutely no-one should have a privacy policy on their website)

You'll have seen a lot (certainly if you follow the sort of people that I follow) about Data Protection Day in the last few days. So I don't propose to tell you about Convention 108, nor why Data Privacy Day (as some people call it) is a misnomer.

@nyrath @markeebee this is why it’s so essential to normalize paying to support whatever Mastodon server you’re on, at whatever level you can. I’ve got a $5/month autopayment set up for wandering.shop, which was what I’d always said I’d happily pay for Twitter to be ad-free. I’ll gladly double that if my follower count continues to grow and if it winds up replacing Twitter for me.

Many Mastodon instance administrators have now received their first hosting bill.

Some of them have seen their bill significantly increase due to the crazy growth we have experienced. Some people may be dealing with bill shock.

Please be sure to support and pay them!

You were the product, thus Twitter was free. Mastodon operates differently.

On their about page, several websites provide links to Patreon or contribution pages.

BBC News

Hey folks, just an FYI from one of the people who responds to your reports.

Hello and welcome to Mastodon where we are one server which receives traffic from other, federated servers.

When you create a report against a user it comes to us, the Macaw owners, and goes to the owner of the server which hosts the offending user. We can:
1. Mute the user (hide them from accounts that don't follow them)
2. Block the user (hide them from all accounts on our server)
3. Defederate from the server

And just like this Mastodon reached another milestone:

8 million registered accounts!

This growth-rate is absolutely mind-blowing and I think we all should take a moment to thank @Gargron and his team plus all the countless admins that are passionately working on this platform.

Thank you so much for creating this amazing community. You absolutely rock and I'm sure that this is just the beginning 🤟

@rysiek this is an interesting discussion and the sort of thing I advise client cloud service providers (not fediverse) on as part of my day job. If I organised a free/confidential zoom workshop session for people to bounce around ideas and discuss what the problem is you are trying to solve and some potential solutions, would people be interested? NB I am UK-based #legal but advise global clients
@TechLitig8or we are funded quite well, but we will posts something from @ordnung in a few days.
