The part that truly made me gasp, though, was where Jack is asked "do you already have a relationship with your chosen wife?" which implies that at least some (and probably most) of the women in the simulation don't even KNOW their husbands in the real world. Focusing on that AT ALL would have possibly salvaged the story but, like most of the social commentary I think they were going for, it's never actually commentaried.
What was Shelly's motivation or goal for killing Frank and saying "it's my turn?" If there's no actual JOB that the men have in the simulation, what's the point of the promotion parties and such (if it's just to make them look good in front of their wives, then why the fraternal rivalry even though the guys all know it's bullshit)? They're just leaving the simulation to go to crappy jobs in the real world that (apparently) have nothing to do with the simulation.
So many things are set up for an amazing reveal, but they just fall away. WHY did the simulation start to break down for her before she knew what was going on? Why did she and Margaret BOTH see a plane that the simulation would have no reason to create? Why did Frank want Alice to "push him" when Margaret had already done that exact thing but better?
