The Golden Age of Hollywood
In April 1933, in response to wage cuts imposed by the major studios, writers founded the Screen Writers Guild. Initially, 173 members paid $100 each. Studio boss Darryl Zanuck’s response spoke for the establishment: “If those guys set up a picket line and try to shut down my studio, I’ll mount a machine gun on the roof and mow them down.”
War was looming in Europe, and Hollywood as well.
