Planning my next #velopunk novel, I'm looking for inspiration by reading the nonfiction books Imaginary Cities by Darran Anderson and How cycling can save the world by Peter Walker. https://bookwitty.social/media/bz0E7Pph2x0XwaRMKmQ
@K2 Heh, I should add (because I was a bit unclear in my previous toot), that I really meant that *writing* such books well is tricky business, and that's why they so often fail as works.

@K2 I could answer ”no, I wouldn't”, because they are pretty tricky and usually fail.

But I could also recommend you Bats of The Republic by Zachary Thomas Dodson. It has a plot, but it also employs several different typographical tricks. The story takes place in the past and in a future, and there's some kind of dystopic future which doesn't employ fire or electricity.

@JessSloan Sure there is room to do better than give random tosses. If a person gives feedback after reading those suggestions, the next round will yield better results, and so on.
Now that I've mailed my submission to a writing contest, I can use the rest of the day by reading a book (or two).
@baeticat For me ebooks have always been just a supplement for the moment when I'm traveling and my stock of print books runs out before I'm back home. In those cases I use my phone to read them.
My reading challenge for 2017: 17 books from authors whose names I can't pronounce (without consulting source material). In #Finnish: http://luojola.fi/mika-se-nimi-olikaan/ https://bookwitty.social/media/c2GrNlt7UD3qFKtYRTU

@moormaan Number of peers to take into account is good. The book universe is so huge that it's almost impossible to find the pearls without a huge peer group.

There are other aspects than star rating that can be generalised to algorithmic form, no need to limit the engine to that.

And no, the input is not static: 1) I read more all the time, 2) more books are published all the time, 3) recommendations could be made from different subsets at different times.

@smays Based on read books, yes. But we're using LibraryThing to catalogue all the books in our home library. Many of those books are not yet read by me. And also, many good books I've read are not in our home library. So based on our whole home library is not very accurate way to get recommendations.

@smays So far I've found only two kinds of recommendations from LibraryThing:
1) based on the whole library
2) based on individual books.

Is it possible to create a custom collection (a subset of library, thus a middle form between the two mentioned above) and get recommendations based on that?
