Ever since I first learned about the mission, NASA Pathfinder captured my imagination. First with its daring EDL sequence, then reading the back stories of how this team came to beat the odds in so many ways the complete narrative became a self-perpetuating inspiration. I highly recommend reading Donna Shirley’s book “Managing Martians” which gives great insight to the mission. As I start finally building my full scale Sojourner replica, I’ll be channeling my inner space cadet and hoping for more missions like this in the future!

2/2 if you ever want to build one, here’s a great 1/2 scale model (that you can totally scale up to full size!) which you can print:

Also, a great book about the mission:

1/2 28 years ago, one of the most valuable science missions landed on the Red Planet. NASA Pathfinder proved many new, innovative, and valuable approaches and exploration techniques. IMHO, Pathfinder (and its Sojourner rover) was the most important space robotic mission as it opened the door to innovative solutions to so many other amazing science challenges.

For the folks visiting #pittsburgh this weekend for #anthrocon - one amazing place to visit is the Heinz Museum. It’s within walking distance of the convention center, and has some awesome exhibits about the history and technology of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. (Links in the next post.)

My top stories from the world of space plants and gardening include space bioreactors, a cultural crop seed payload, anthocyanins and synthetic lichen on Mars!

On a call today: …”hundreds of kilo amps…” Zeus may even have raised an eyebrow when he hear that up on Olympus. 🤣

"While proposed bases on the Moon or Mars might get all the headlines, there's another equally hostile and largely unknown location a lot closer to home that explorers are looking towards: the bottom of the ocean."
