I'm a new-ish Linux user trying to make better, easier, and more approachable tutorials for basic tasks in Linux. You can check out my blog here:

@DaveMasonDotMe I don't know any for sure, but it wouldn't surprise me with how apps are pushed on us for every service.

I think my bank requires the app for online paper cheque deposits, but that could be more about their back-end and verification rather than disincentivizing online banking.

My desktop could not update to Win11. I bought it with Win7 on it. Will it support the fancy Distros? Anduin, Cachy, or Zorn? #linux I like #linux_mint but want to see what else it s out there.

@DaveMasonDotMe Personally, I use as few apps as possible since they feel redundant to me when (working) websites exist. If a service doesn't have a decent website - or no website at all - I probably won't use it.

That's not always an option for things like banking, which is certainly a problem for FOSS mobile devices currently.

@KO6YQ The amount of strange and delightful things you can do with a RaspberryPi never ceases to impress me.
@jimp I'm more lukewarm on the software than most, but I do like the hardware; though the software side is definitely a big win for Linux gaming. Plus, consulting ProtonDB has never been easier with their steam deck section!
My new #Linux post about deleting pre-installed apps on MXLinux is live! I also added a much-needed search bar, and it only took FOUR months! Check it out here: https://simpleeasylinux.wordpress.com/2026/03/13/delete-pre-installed-apps-on-mxlinux/
Delete Pre-installed Apps on MXLinux

In this tutorial, I’m showing you how to delete pre-installed apps if you’re using MXLinux as your distro. This is a great way of cleaning up your system of apps you don’t want, o…

@jimp I've only had to give up on one game, which I'd say is pretty good. It also runs things like Fallout 3 that modern Windows machines struggle with!
@miss_rodent Thanks! It's definitely new - think I started late last year or early this year - but it's going pretty well so far. I actually just scheduled my most recent post, which is usually when I jump onto Mastodon for chat and inspiration!

@miss_rodent Things were definitely easier to find before the advent of click-through rates and commodified attention, but I digress. I would personally love to see something like a physical reference book, maybe with some crash courses and other basics, but I haven't found anything specifically.

I know I've seen "complete beginner guides" on search results pages, but I haven't tried them and they may get a bit technical for a newbie.

Folks who have switched to #Linux / #BSD more recently than I have (so, less than 20 years ago...), are there any good 'complete beginner's guide' sorts of things you'd recommend?
I'm getting more people asking me about switching [Guess MS pissed a bunch of people off again?] and it would be easier to manage if I had a thing to link them written by someone who has any idea at-fucking-all what it's like to switch from windows, since I haven't used windows since XP.
