On This Day In HistoryToday in 1783, 240 years ago: simultaneously arrives in Paris (France), Turin and Padua (Italy) the acidic cloud from the Laki volcano (of Iceland), which exploded on June 8 and will erupt in the next 8 months. In the following two years it will cause a great famine, which will leave a balance of 6 million deaths worldwide. It has been described as “one of the greatest environmental catastrophes in European history”.
