Got the new grill assembled and introduced to its new habitat. This is a 22” Weber Original Kettle Premium, an upgrade from the basic 18” Original Kettle I’ve used for the last six years.

The extra cooking real estate and enclosed ash bucket will be very nice. My entry level grill served me well, though, and is still in great shape.

Just in case people are under the impression that I always drink fancy craft beer. Tonight’s beverage is a Kirin Grape Sour. The main ingredient is vodka, followed by a long list of arcane laboratory concoctions. It saw a grape once.

It tastes exactly like the Dimetapp decongestant your mom gave you as a kid*: DELICIOUS. Costs pocket change, and is 9% ABV because the horrors persist. Goes down like candy, but you’ll feel gross later.

*Assuming you’re an American of a certain age.

Tonight’s beer: SuppaMikan Fruit Ale, a sour mikan-flavored wheat beer by Fuji Premium Brewing, Shizuoka. 5% ABV.

The mikan flavor is definitely present but not overpowering, and the beer has a light, summery feel.

Tonight’s beer is called Homework, and it’s an Imperial Green Apple Gose from Tokyo’s Fetish Club brewery. (knew about them for a while, but this is my first beer by them.)

Ngl, picked this for the cute bum on the label artwork, a photo called “The Last Cabaret” credited to Yang Seung-Woo. Gose is probably my least favorite type of beer, but this is drinkable. 8% ABV.

Triple Cone by Shizuoka’s West Coast Brewing. Another New England-style hazy IPA, but with a tiny bit more punch than their Summer Breeze (7% ABV vs 6%). Not massively different in flavor, but I preferred this one.

Tonight’s beer: Centaur by Teenage Brewing, Saitama(!) Japan. It’s a double New England style hazy IPA, 8% ABV.

Didn’t know this would be another hazy IPA when I bought it, I usually try to mix things up a bit, but hazy IPAs are one of my favorite styles so I’m OK with it. Clearer than last night’s hazy IPA, but noticeably weightier. A sipping beer.

Tonight’s beer: Summer Breeze by West Coast Brewing, Shizuoka Japan. It’s a New England style hazy IPA. 6% ABV. Light and fruity, looks like grapefruit juice in the glass!

The other day I went to the Sorayama “Sexy Robot” Hajime art retrospective in Tokyo’s Kyōbashi, and then went to a joint art show/print sale in nearby Ginza featuring more Sorayama, along with Terada Katsuya, Rockin’ JellyBean, and special guest Shirow Masamune.

So if you’re in Tokyo and into horny artwork, there’s a lot going on at the moment.

Went to the Hokusai / Eisen exhibition of early 19th century erotic Japanese prints.

It was held in a pretty gritty part of Kabukicho, with the first half at a tiny kabuki theater and the second at a fully-functioning host club, with the snuggling seats and dim lighting and everything surrounding temporary display cases. Staff also seemed to be Kabukicho-issue Mizu Shōbai types, but the art collection was legit.

My parents are visiting for Golden Week, so I grilled for them today. Did four steaks (salt rub, salt + pepper rub, herb rub), Montreal chicken, baked potatoes cooked on the coals, bratwurst, and corn on the cob with basil-Parmesan butter.

Everybody is stuffed and off to take a post-meal nap, so mission accomplished.

Burnt my arm on the hot grill lid like a dumbass, but the god of fire always demands a sacrifice.
