Didn’t have a lid big enough for the skillet, but as they say: “IMPROVISE, ADAPT, OVERCOME.”
Made one-skillet pasta in my new cast iron yesterday. Turned out good, but there was a LOT of it. Cleanup was a bit of a hassle.

I have joined the cast iron skillet cult. Ended up with a 12” model from Lodge. Today I sanded down the rough factory finish, then seasoned with three coats of oil.

The weight probably makes it a bit too unwieldy for my wife and Mother-in-Law to use, but I’m looking forward to cooking with it.

Did the thing today. Didn’t grill as much as usual or very complicated stuff since I’m out of practice (last grilled Nov. 2024).

Montreal chicken, two steaks (one just with salt, the other with an herb rub), two kinds of sausages (garlic & onion, pepper), and foil-wrapped baked potatoes cooked directly on the coals.

Made Santa Fe Chicken in the slow cooker today. Turned out good. Six hour cook.

Used kidney beans instead of the recipe’s black beans, since that’s what I had on hand.

Daughter shoveled it down, but complained about the beans, saying she only likes beans with hiragana names, not foreign katakana ones. 🙄

Made Instant Pot chicken carnitas for tacos tonight. Easy but a crowd pleaser.

With work, school club activities, and the need to open presents while on FaceTime (so the grandparents get some return on their investment, seeing my daughter open her gifts), we ended up pushing back our Christmas festivities to today.

In addition to grilling supplies, hot sauces, and a bottle of rum, I got a bottle-sized oak cask to age whiskey in. From Taru Holic, a Japanese company.

The work day is not quite complete, but I went out to Yebisu Bar for a sneaky pint. This should make the remaining time go faster.
