Trying to figure out how this thing works, like everyone else. I’m #vegan 🌱 and like nuclear power ☢️ plants. #MaskUp #N95 #p100

@tampalini It looks ok on my end. Sometimes a move just needs some time to sort things out?
Maybe I’ll be active here again, not sure. Sad to see #pebble go.

"In my view, Pebble was the nicest corner of the internet... A global feed that featured everyone on the platform brought the world closer together, and Pebble orchestrated it in a way that was fun, friendly, and kind"

Goodbye Pebble.

The friendliest town square on the net closes November 1st.

Oh god I redid the math on re-entries:

Each Starlink v2 sat weighs 1250kg. They plan to have 42,000 of them in orbit.

Each satellite has a planned lifetime of 5 years. That means they'll be de-orbiting and replacing ALL of them every 5 years.

That comes to 23 sats per day, which is 29 TONS OF SATELLITE every day.

It doesn't go away, it gets added to the upper atmosphere. Most of the mass is aluminum. What the hell is that going to do?

WHY THE FUCK IS THIS OK?!

A different astronomy and space science related image is featured each day, along with a brief explanation.

I understand why some people don’t like algorithmic feeds. There is a feeling not only that you don’t have control in what you are presented and that the machines/people who do have control are optimizing for their objectives (max engagement + $) not yours (value for time…). That feeling is justified.

Throwing out the idea of computers helping us deal with info overload and discovery of things we truly care about is not, IMO, justified.

Our image processors at the Space Telescope Science Institute, Alyssa Pagan and Joseph DePasquale, recently did a public lecture on The Art & Science of Webb Imagery. Check it out!
