Midwest quilter, Democrat, she/her, @Dawnmsh on the bird site. reads more than posts, just trying to figure it all out.
@msquebanh yeah, at that price, a Brother or possibly a Juki machine would be your best bet. The higher end names--Bernina, Janome--don't have the computerized features at that price point, which you need for the push button start/stop and speed control. I really like Brothers.

In some lighter news from Ukraine, beavers are helping fortify the border against possible attack from Belarus. Without the usual tourists, and with so many residents gone, beavers are being unusually active this winter and are creating more dams than usual. This is actually serious, because the Russian army is short on infantry vehicles and winter gear, making wide, cold streams legitimately dangerous

So thank you, beavers. From this day forth you can hold you heads with pride and say that when your country needed you, you did give a dam

@msquebanh not sure what your upper $ limit is, but lower end Brother machines have a good reputation and good features. The Brother SQ9285 is $200 on the Walmart website and has a push-button start/stop feature and slider speed control. I started on a similar-but-more-basic machine, and it still sews well. Not strong enough for a lot of heavy fabric sewing though.
@davidgerard So how come you can make such a long post and don't have a 500 character limit?
@inarticulatequilter That's beautiful! I love the different bands of color.
@drvolts Once I made the mistake of going to Breitbart to read something. Immediately afterwards my Facebook feed was FULL of every Red-Maga-guns-eagles-Patriot post, ad, group recommendation, whatever. I tried hiding it all for days, it kept popping up. I finally went to Mother Jones and Planned Parenthood websites, and that seemed to fix it. All the right-wing stuff disappeared, and I'm back to normal. BUT, nothing lefty or environmental either!
@drvolts I have a story about this. I am on Facebook for family, friends, and community news. I am as lefty as they come, follow a few Democratic politicians, read occasional left newsy stuff. By all rights my feed should be FULL of lefty stuff, but it isn't. Only a few ads during elections maybe, that's it.
@kathryntewson @gwensnyder Yeah, I think I know which server you are talking about. I almost joined that one because a few prominent people joined it. In the end I picked what I did because it was on the joinmastodon.org site and it was accepting new people right away. It looks like there are a lot more to choose from now than when I was looking (1st Twitter wave).

@schock @Malcriada @gwensnyder lol, yeah, I saw the wizard before I signed up.
"How big a server do you want?" I have no idea.

"Is nudity okay?" Uhhhh...

"What about advertising?" Me: close wizard and walk away for another 3 days.

I'm not a tech idiot, but that's a lot of questions to answer for something you know nothing about. It's much easier to figure some of that out once you are actually on.

@Malcriada @gwensnyder maybe even a few onboarding servers that are meant to be temporary. Sort of a "start here, and then we'll help you figure out where you want to go".
