Midwest quilter, Democrat, she/her, @Dawnmsh on the bird site. reads more than posts, just trying to figure it all out.

In some lighter news from Ukraine, beavers are helping fortify the border against possible attack from Belarus. Without the usual tourists, and with so many residents gone, beavers are being unusually active this winter and are creating more dams than usual. This is actually serious, because the Russian army is short on infantry vehicles and winter gear, making wide, cold streams legitimately dangerous

So thank you, beavers. From this day forth you can hold you heads with pride and say that when your country needed you, you did give a dam

Everyone hoping antitrust cases are going to solve the Twitter implosion are going to have an unhappy time.

The law isn't going to fix it. Antitrust requires finding that Twitter is market-dominant in the US, which is probably isn't, and the EU is very big but very slow.

I get it; it sucks. But there's no cavalry coming to fix it so you don't have to make hard choices. It lives or dies based only on whether enough users choose to leave to break its dominance.

A long-form discussion of why I think it’s important to be specific when we’re debating free speech. Are we talking law, culture, or decency?

In Defense Of Free Speech Pedantry

Why You Should Clarify Which Free Speech Value You’re Debating

The Popehat Report
Folks, get a grip: these are just Twitter accounts. It's not like the unbalanced man-child has the power to send his enemies' cars careening off the freeway.
People are claiming Elon Musk lied about those journalists revealing his location but to be fair they did all reveal that his head is up his ass

The redoubtable Ben Collins -- one of the best in the business - just came aboard Mastodon. You should follow him immediately. @oneunderscore__

(I'll put together a list of tech reporters and post it soon.)

It was clear from the jump Musk didn’t understand the site he’d bought, but I’m still a bit surprised he doesn’t grasp that journalists are the main reason Twitter was more relevant than any number of other similar platforms. Can easily imagine looking back on this as a tipping point.

Remember: Twitter is Elon's company, he has the free speech and free association right to run it pretty much however he wants and to ban people for petty narcissistic reasons.

And we have the right to laugh and point at his ridiculousness and at the free-speech pretenses of his gullible fans.
