Twenty-some years ago, I got my ass out of #Phoenix because I saw what a hellhole it would become with #ClimateChange and resource depletion. The place is a cancerous growth in the hottest part of the country fed by a few ribbons of asphalt pavement and steel railroad track, watered by the dwindling remnants of the Colorado River.

But I’m not really feeling that smug about it. The planet is dying and the death will come for my little corner of the country, too.

Sorry this is a gloomy post.

@angelteeth We live in an atomised society. And the atomisation of society, whether or not it is a carefully planned conspiracy to do this, has the effect of making collective action harder.

Building collective ways of living with people with whom we are in sympathy – building the new world we want to see from the bottom up, one locality at a time – seems to me a vital first step, even if it cannot achieve the change we need in time.

Here for your perusal and enjoyment is a wonderfully eye-catching banded alder borer (Rosalia funebris) photographed in our #PNW back yard this afternoon.

Despite the ominous name, it is not an unwelcome or invasive pest, and apparently these gorgeous creatures are drawn to recently painted houses - exactly true in our case - where they can gather in large congregations.

Perhaps this one is waiting for some friends to show up.

Kaum sind deutsche Touristen persönlich betroffen, schafft es die #Klimakatastrophe mit zwei Artikeln auf Platz 1 der Headlines bei tagesschau.de. Glücklicherweise wurde niemand verletzt.

25 tote Menschen durch Waldbrände in Algerien sind allerdings nur einen Platz 12 wert. Die klimabedingte Hungersnot am Horn von Afrika interessiert eh nicht.
