For nearly 30 years, journalists have relied on the Internet Archive to see how stories were originally published, before edits, removals, or changes. We need to safeguard that. https://www.eff.org/deeplinks/2026/03/blocking-internet-archive-wont-stop-ai-it-will-erase-webs-historical-record
Blocking the Internet Archive Won’t Stop AI, But It Will Erase the Web’s Historical Record

Imagine a newspaper publisher announcing it will no longer allow libraries to keep copies of its paper. That’s effectively what’s begun happening online in the last few months. The Internet Archive—the world’s largest digital library—has preserved newspapers since it went online in the mid-1990s....

The current, ongoing near total Internet shutdown in Iran, disconnecting Iranians from the global Internet, is now longer than the January 2026 shutdown during nation-wide protests. This makes the current shutdown the longest shutdown IODA has documented in Iran.

Iran is currently enduring its longest-ever internet shutdown, which began shortly after the Feb-28 airstrikes.

My latest post covers all of 2026, outages within the whitelisted traffic, and other observations from our data. #DigitalBlackOutIran‌

Internet and Airstrikes: Tracking Iran's Extended Communication Blackout

In this post, we use Kentik’s traffic statistics to dig into the ongoing internet shutdown in Iran, which began within hours of American and Israeli airstrikes on February 28. This is the second shutdown of the year for Iran and its worst in history. Despite the shutdown, a small amount of whitelisted traffic continues to flow in and out of the country. Using our unique traffic data, we visualize changes within this residual traffic in recent days as the government cracks down on Iranians…

Iran is in the 10th day of the second internet shutdown of 2026.

Within the small amount of traffic that continues to trickle out of Iran since Feb-28, several networks experienced further drops in traffic volume on Mar-5 possibly due to airstrikes.

The current Internet shutdown in Iran is in its 7th day.

A small amount of traffic continues to trickle out of Iran for whitelisted individuals and services, for everyone else, almost no connectivity whatsoever.

Internet connectivity down in Iran as airstrikes hit the country.

Traffic volume dropped at 07:06 UTC and then again at 11:47 UTC with minimal connectivity remaining.

The country had a partial restoration since Jan-27 following a complete shutdown in Jan-8.

IODA shows the Internet in Iran has been cutoff from the global Internet since ~7:00 AM UTC. The regime implemented a similar Internet shutdown when Israel attacked Iran in June of 2025.

With #war erupting between the U.S. and #Iran, the internet is quickly impacted, leaving very few international connections operational. #IranInternetStatis #IranTensions

The Permanent Working Group on Passive Defense in #Iran approved the "National Strategic Document on Electronic Passive Defense" to strengthen the resilience of critical infrastructure against electronic threats. The 10-year roadmap highlights the country’s heavy reliance on electronic systems, communications networks, satellites, and the electromagnetic spectrum as key vulnerabilities.

It assigns the Ministry of Communications responsibility for preparing alternative telecom and #Internet routes and enabling the connection or disconnection of external networks from the National Information Network (#NIN) during crises. The document also calls for protecting the national frequency spectrum, including against #satellite Internet services, to safeguard cyber sovereignty.

Internet service in Iran continues to be limited following a partial restoration.

Since Jan-27, we're seeing traffic volumes at 58% of what they were prior to the Jan-8 shutdown. During the day, traffic curves appear erratic, indicating disconnections.
