Not to put too fine a point on it, but a university's former president criticizing the current administration for their handling of a free speech/academic freedom controversy is just about unprecedented in my experience. It's just one of those unspoken customs. That's how badly Hamline has managed the firing of art history lecturer Erika López Prater.

Shakespeare:
"When I came, alas, to wive,
With a hey ho, the wind and the rain ..."

New York Times Spelling Bee: "Oh no, you don't!"

(They don't count the word #wive or #wiving in today's puzzle. One of these days I'm going to compile a list of all the perfectly good #Shakespeare words the #NYTSpellingBee has rejected.)

The #MedievalAcademyOfAmerica weighs in on the incident of an #adjunct art history professor getting fired at #HamlineUniversity:

The statement draws attention to how little protection “precariously employed” adjuncts have against violations of their academic freedom. I would argue that it also shows how much power non-faculty administrators, “deans and deanlets,” have gained over even full-time faculty in the modern university.

@ProfGawain Thanks for sharing this essay. It offered me some fascinating insights into Tolkien's work, and I might also give The Green Knight another go now I understand a little more about the underlying story.

I was also very pleased to see Ghân-buri-Ghân get some attention as he's one of my favourite minor characters in the books.

This week on QAnon Anonymous we go over bizarre testimony released by the January 6th committee and chat with Charlie Warzel about what Elon Musk's text messages reveal about his intentions for Twitter.

And last, by way of #Introduction ... here’s a link to an article I wrote for a blog, which talks about one of the classes I like to teach: Tolkien’s Medieval English Sources. It’s about #Tolkien , The #LordOfTheRings, the #GawainPoet , #Shakespeare , #AMidsummerNightsDream , these weird #medieval creatures called #woodwoses , and more:

Here’s a picture and link to my most recent publication, a chapter in Becoming the #PearlPoet , edited by Jane Beal. It’s about the question of who might have written the #Pearl and #Gawain poems, and what we might say about him/her with the limited information we have:

(Yes, it’s an expensive academic book: see if your library has a copy.)
#Introduction 3/4
Here’s a link to my book, The #GawainPoet and the 14th-Century English #Anticlerical Tradition, from Medieval Institute Publications. It’s about #medieval #priests behaving badly, and how lots of people, including the author of the poem Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, criticized and made fun of them:

#Introduction 2/4

Since I didn't include the hashtag the first time around, let me try doing this #Introduction thread again.
