our first thought is italics+bold, but on further consideration I think italics+underline is more logical.

you could probably come up with a CSS rule for it. maybe

i em { text-decoration: underline; }

or something? we don't really know CSS.

asterisk-italics is basically HTML em tag: marking text for emphasis.

underscore-italics is any other function italics can serve, including book titles, emotes on Discord (which doesn't support real emotes), math variables, whatever. best approximation might be HTML i tag, but it's definitely losing data.

when reading Markdown, should *asterisk-italics* and _underline-italics_ be interpreted the same?
