Goodbye to Alan Rankine (1958-2023). Scottish musician, member of The Associates and producer of offbeat acts (Cocteau Twins, Paul Haig, The Pale Fountains) who created some of the most warped, arty, interesting music of the '80s.
Also, one of the few men who could stand next to Billy Mackenzie and still look good.
So....I spent the afternoon teaching an AI computer about David Bowie, Ziggy Stardust, Planet Of The Apes and 2001. The results are....um....interesting.

Kate Bush was running up the pop charts, The Cure were on tour, Top Gun was the must see film in the cinemas, the West was fighting a proxy war with Russia, people were playing D&D without embarrassment and Paul McCartney was cool again.
Goodbye 1986. Here's hoping I step out of the shower tomorrow like Bobby Ewing and discover that the last few decades have all been a dream and that it really is 1987 all over again.
Goodbye to Vivienne Westwood (1941-2022). The mother of punk. Without her, it simply wouldn't have happened. Before you talk about punk as a social change, a musical force, a situationist prank, a youth rebellion or anything else you have to talk about it as a fashion statement. Without Westwood, UK punk would never have had the shock factor, the defiance, the confrontational attitude. The look was everything, the music secondary.
Goodbye to Pelé (1940—2022). A global sports superstar. An actual superhero in Brazil. Three World Cups in three different decades. And let's not forget that he altered the course of WWII with a last minute bicycle kick into the top of the net that defeated the Nazis.

Joy Division - 'Atmosphere'
Not a Xmas record at all, of course, but impossible to hear without thinking of snow falling on cemetries or glaciers slowly melting.
For absent friends.
Cheers.
The Handsome Family - 'So Much Wine'
"I had nothing to say on Christmas Day
When you threw all your clothes in the snow"
Now, that's how you open a song.
I love it. Sort of like 'Fairytale Of New York' but with hillbillies.
Drink responsibly.
