"The NDP will start winning again because we will become that beacon to the 99 per cent — illuminating the darkening sky of these terrifying times with the energizing light of collectivism." - Avi Lewis

In other words, we win together in solidarity.

To reiterate, Avi Lewis is calling for:
- A national cap on rent.
- A wealth tax on the top 1% (which could produce $40 billion in public revenue).
- Public options for groceries and telecom. There's also talk of public ownership in manufacturing.
- A Green New Deal investing 2% of GDP into climate action (note that the Carney government has raised Canadian military spending to 2% GDP instead, while promising to further raise it to 4%).
- A moratorium on AI data centres over concerns about jobs, privacy, and environmental impact.

A voice for the masses was elected, but the Alberta NDP still wants to bow over to the dying oil industry which is using our government to actively shut down sustainable jobs with billions of dollars in investment and hundreds of millions in shovel ready projects, and can't see anything else for our future.

Newly named NDP leader Avi Lewis promised to bring back the party from the political wilderness after its dismal showing in last year's federal election.

" It’s puzzling why Carney keeps doing things that alienate his own supporters, let alone his own MPs. After all, the reason Carney is sitting in the Prime Minister’s Office is because progressive swing voters made a strategic choice to lend him their votes — they didn’t lend Carney their vote to appease Trump, impose austerity or roll back workers’ rights.

Carney may genuinely believe he’s being pragmatic or putting the “national interest” above all else. But increasingly it looks more and more like Carney simply misunderstands the mandate he was handed by his own voters"

We knew he was a blue Liberal. But Mark Carney is alienating progressive voters

The new PM's defiant tone doesn't always appear to match his actions.

“I was kidnapped. The conditions are inhumane. Packed like sardines. A man dropped dead and they just moved us aside… It’s not just criminals. I had all my papers in order. They’re just looking for numbers.” Watch. Share.
Whilst many here in England fly their flags, proud to be British, I couldn't be any more ashamed. Whilst "White British" for me has only ever been a checkbox on a form, for others it is their entire identity.
How boring, plain and empty does someone have to be for that to be the extent of who they are? To be so fearful of anyone even slightly beyond the basic, that it makes them hate with such passion? Creates such a desperate need within themselves to protect that, by pulling those people below themselves and trampling all over them.
I know these people well. They've bullied me at school. Bullied me in the workplace, and bullied me in the streets.
Yet for me, compared to others, I might first appear to be a "White British", just like them, but with a weirdness that doesn't pigeonhole easily, which always put me on the brunt.
I stand by trans. I stand by immigrants. I stand by homosexuals. I stand by neurodivergents. I stand by the creatives, and everyone who's existence offends them.
There are more of us together than there are of them. The fight has only just begun.

A new work written especially for Danielle Smith and the UCP.

A true reflection of how Alberta is turning into an autocracy more and more each day.

Look, Jeff Atwood, it is difficult to take you seriously when you write authoritatively on a subject you clearly don’t understand.

GDPR doesn’t mandate cookie notices.

Cookie notices are *malicious compliance* by the surveillance-driven adtech industry.

If you’re not tracking people, you do not need a cookie notice, period.

If you’re only using first-party cookies for functional reasons, you do not need a cookie notice, period.

If you’re using third-party cookies to track people – i.e., if you’re sharing their data with others – then *you must have their consent to do so*. Because, otherwise, you are violating their privacy. Even then, the law doesn’t mandate a cookie notice.

How would you conform to EU law without a cookie notice if your aim wasn’t malicious compliance?

You would not track people by default and you would make it so they have to go your site’s settings to turn on third-party tracking if, for some inexplicable reason, they wanted that “feature”.

Boom!

No cookie notice necessary.

What’s that?

But that would destroy your business because your business is founded on the fundamental mechanic of violating people’s privacy?

Good.

Your business doesn’t deserve to exist.

Because the real bullshit here isn’t EU legislation that protects the human right to privacy, it’s the toxic Silicon Valley/Big Tech business model of farming people for data that violates everyone’s privacy and opens the door to technofascism.

Look, EU, it is difficult to take you seriously when you forced all this cookie notification bullshit on us. That feature a) should not exist and b) if it did, should be a BROWSER feature not "every website in the entire world now has to bother everyone forever about this stupid thing" https://blog.codinghorror.com/breaking-the-webs-cookie-jar/

Today in Labor History July 1, 1944: Willem Arondeus, a gay, Dutch, anti-Nazi resistance fighter was executed by the occupation forces, along with eleven others, for bombing the Amsterdam public records office in order to prevent Nazis from identifying Dutch Jews and others wanted by the Gestapo. His final words were: "Tell people that homosexuals are not cowards."
