The word 'hamlet' is closely related to 'home', but while 'home' has always been a Germanic word, 'hamlet' entered English from French.
Proto-West Germanic *haim (village), the ancestor of 'home', was borrowed into Old French as 'ham'.
It was then turned into a diminutive twice: 'ham' > 'hamel' (small village) > 'hamelet' (little small village).
Ultimately, it was borrowed into English and became 'hamlet'.
