@n8dmt I haven't heard of any other dead VX8, they seem to quite robust. But yeah, with the service manual it is not that bad, even though the PCBs definitely could need more probe points. I expected that I would need more time to find the issue, but marking possible issues in the schematic beforehand definitely payed off ;)
@neuron I fully agree, without the service manual I probably would have never found the fault, as the LDO regulator is on the completely other side of the PCB and the routing is just chaos 😅 It was already hard enough to find the components in the layout.

Some time ago this Yaesu VX8 of a friend of mine died while transmitting, no display, no LEDs, no charging light.

Last week I took it apart to see if it could be fixed.
I traced the voltage rails in the service manual, the micro controller voltage was completely dead. I suspected the LDO regulator, but it turned out to be a reverse protection diode. I don't have SMD diodes, but there was enough space to fit a similar DO diode 🎉
The VX8 is still a great radio, I also have one

Hmm, APRS coverage in central London seems to be basically nonexistent, also no stations at all my Vx8 could decode on 2m.

@F4JWJ @dynode yup, it's AFSK over FM, just like any direct FM frequency
@m0rpk thanks, we totally forgot about Bletchley Park!
Hello UK hams, we're visiting the UK (London, Cambridge, Canterbury) the first two weeks of October. I'm planning to bring an FT817 if luggage allows, are there any things to visit we should not miss?
@on1arf @M0YNG obviously for bulk-flashing them to OpenWRT to be used in mesh networks :) Flashed quite a lot of those in 2006-2009ish, stacking also helped when putting them into boxes to be connected to different sector antennas ;)
But generally Linksys also built other networking hardware (iirc VPN gateways and switches, not sure about modems) in the same form factor that would have made sense to stack.
@VE2UWY i have one of the same, identical packaging when shipped to europe ;) I also got a PL middle isolator via ali and usually mount it to a manfrotto superclamp with M10 insert, works quite well for me.
