I think I'm going to go back to <view source> and sparkly mouse trails in Java.
Looking forward to joining the brilliant team at Ukie as their new CEO from next week and to ensuring that the UK continues to be the best place in the world to make, sell and play video games! www.ukie.org.uk
Literacy challenges in children and young people take many forms, including dyslexia. Maggie Snowling has been at the forefront of research into child language development and education policy for many years. In this excellent article, she lifts the lid on how Government and school leaders could be doing more to spot children with developmental needs and to target support more effectively. Well worth a read!

Maggie Snowling: Why schools need to look beyond dyslexia

It's important to continue to raise awareness about dyslexia, but lesser-known literacy and language difficulties also deserve our attention, says Maggie Snowling

When in 2019 Boris Johnson's Conservatives secured an 80-seat majority, the stage seemed set for a lesson in the virtues of Conservatism. Having failed to resolve the Brexit deadlock in 2017, the new Parliament was an opportunity to showcase how traditional priorities of devolution, deregulation & enterprise would kick-start the economy. Yet the experiment failed and the opportunity was wasted. Have we now learned that economic dogma should never trump sound governance? Sadly, I doubt it.

According to data from the Kings Fund on the determinants of #Health Inequality, children from households in the bottom fifth of income distribution in the UK are over 4 times more likely to experience severe mental health problems that those in the highest 5th.

The "information poverty trap" directly affects people's long-term health - the same evidence shows that people with a higher academic qualification live up to 5 years longer.

“Residents can go to any of the borough’s 11 libraries where they can keep warm and use the internet free of charge” - Wandsworth libraries are offering meals and showers to those who are already struggling thanks to the cost of living crisis.

Thank goodness for libraries. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again - they’re worth fighting for (esp. as they’re more under threat of cuts and closure than ever).

Hello everyone- like many here I suspect- I’m very new to Mastadon, and have followed the exodus from Twitter. I’m the Collections Librarian at the PMI Victorian History Library in Melbourne. I’ve really enjoyed the GLAM community I’ve been part of through other social media so I’m looking forward to connecting with other GLAM folks, both known and unknown, and sharing ideas.

It's not clear from the previous graph whether the digital events through covid had greater reach - this shows an answer.

While digital events had significant reach (blue), the sheer number of physical events means total reach of physical events (red) is much higher, even though no.s at each event are lower.

Physical events are now reaching more than 3 times the number of people than digital events managed through the pandemic.

Update on our libraries activity data:

UK public libraries footfall closing in on, but still lagging behind, high street footfall at 67% of pre covid levels.

Lending levels much more closely aligned with High Street footfall - now at around 90% of pre-covid levels.

Libraries tell us this is due to fewer people attending events, and borrowing more books on less frequent visits.
Clearly shows footfall doesn't represent activity.

I can’t remember who posted it, but one toot I loved was about the Irish library service. I had no idea how much it had developed and I’ve just gotten my first library card in probably over 15 years, go raibh maith agat! #IrishLibraries #libraries #reading
