Computer Science Academic with interest in everything.

What isn't remembered never happened. Memory is merely a record. You just need to re-write that record.

On the other hand, being able to make these pleasantries without understanding could have a real advantage in not sounding rude.
But the whole concept just fills me with dread whenever I see somebody on stage producing more text that I need to parse then.

Similarly, the increase in generative AI is really scary for me. Not because of some terminator stuff.

For some people in our society understanding "social" text is really difficult. You might now that an email starts with some wage formality, has some context encoded in more pleasantries and ends with some more formality. Parsing the actual content and meaning behind this can be difficult for me. Adding more ways to add new, generated pleasantries could make this much more difficult.

The incentives for capitalism are wrong if we are really putting "AI" into everything when it can just lie to us. Didn't we learn anything from an election a couple years ago and the whole fake news?
#AI

I wish there were a place in the academy for people who learn hard things and then write better books and give talks and exposit, since I really think that's where my skills naturally lie. I love convincing people that hard math doesn't have to be scary.

Well, once I have tenure maybe I can do a 180 and start writing expository books. Or maybe by then I'll be less insecure about doing research and I won't want to anymore! Who's to say, haha.

https://mastodon.matrix.org/@element/110340953550548309 gives most of the context behind this. There are some arguments i can understand, mostly that police does quite a bit of harm to underrepresented folk and hence, element should take the high ground and not use their money.
I just can't agree with that point. Because my taxes go to element instead of some venture capital that siphons police data towards the US.

@[email protected] @matrix @[email protected] https://element.io/blog/the-online-safety-bill-an-attack-on-encryption gives an idea of our position. And no, there are no backdoors. Yes, we fund Matrix dev by selling encrypted messaging services to governments, which includes police: if you donโ€™t like that then please feel free to use a different app.

There is something weird going on with the fediverse and element/matrix. Everybody is outraged (and i was too until i reread the post) but i can't quite figure out why. They sell their *service* to law enforcement which i find fine. They do not sell the messages (as far as I know). So what is the problem? Should we boycott clothing companies? Donut shops?
Am i.missing something?

Finally, a solution to the unfairness of authorship ordering in scientific papers! ๐Ÿ˜‚

"Every Author as First Author"

Every Author as First Author

We propose a new standard for writing author names on papers and in bibliographies, which places every author as a first author -- superimposed. This approach enables authors to write papers as true equals, without any advantage given to whoever's name happens to come first alphabetically (for example). We develop the technology for implementing this standard in LaTeX, BibTeX, and HTML; show several examples; and discuss further advantages.

@megalodon I wonder if there is a way to get two timelines, one of only reboots and one of only new things. Living in a different time zone would.make this very useful.
One thing that is definitely worse for me here is the timeline. Boosts get not collected in a meaningful way. Whenever i browse the global trending posts i see things that then get repeated in my timeline by people boosting. Multiple boosts at different times are given separately instead of collected. Boosts of things i am interested in fall by the wayside because i am not awake when they are given.
Perhaps a separate tab with just boosted from my timeline would be a start.
