There is something weird going on with the fediverse and element/matrix. Everybody is outraged (and i was too until i reread the post) but i can't quite figure out why. They sell their *service* to law enforcement which i find fine. They do not sell the messages (as far as I know). So what is the problem? Should we boycott clothing companies? Donut shops?
Am i.missing something?
https://mastodon.matrix.org/@element/110340953550548309 gives most of the context behind this. There are some arguments i can understand, mostly that police does quite a bit of harm to underrepresented folk and hence, element should take the high ground and not use their money.
I just can't agree with that point. Because my taxes go to element instead of some venture capital that siphons police data towards the US.

@[email protected] @matrix @[email protected] https://element.io/blog/the-online-safety-bill-an-attack-on-encryption gives an idea of our position. And no, there are no backdoors. Yes, we fund Matrix dev by selling encrypted messaging services to governments, which includes police: if you don’t like that then please feel free to use a different app.
