Lurked here long enough (like 5 years) so time for an #introduction. I'm a mathematician and Associate Professor at Westminster College in Salt Lake City, into knot theory, poetry, and justice. Love facilitating undergrad research & have moved a bit into data science. I'm nonbinary and bi- + pansexual; my pronouns are they/them/theirs.

The birdsite launched collabs & connections, hope Masto does too! 💜

Hey PSA

If you're going to talk about the #fediblock tag but not actually use your post as a proper warning for other instances, don't use the "# "

I don't. If I need to mention something fediblock adjacent, I write the word but I just don't tag it.

Because otherwise you flood the tag with posts that don't function the way the tag needs to and ppl got sift thru stuff for actual useful info.

Pls, stop.

I find it so upsetting that trans identity is something that people who aren't trans debate in political forums. The idea of leaving the nature of one's identity up to anyone outside of one's self... it's just so presumptuous, arrogant, mean, and intrusive. It's like deciding someone else's religion, politics, favorite food, profession for them. How on earth do people think that is OK? It's so far outside of my comprehension. #trans

Loving Mastodon! I haven't left birdsite...but the new owner & I don't see eye to eye.

I'm an #AutisticElder, 70. I write, podcast & video about my personal experiences growing up before autism was invented...50s & 60s.

If you're autistic, love one, work with some...or just wonder if you ARE one... you might find something of use.

👉Checkout ALL the voices you'll find thru #ActuallyAutistic!

I get a lot of PMs from parents & newly diagnosed folks. So feel free!

I keep seeing posts that continuously attempt to reiterate that Mastodon is nothing like Twitter.

The problem is the same formula for, "Well I don't use this thing and it's not here, so you don't need to care about it. Well, you can just do these 25 extra steps and you'll be fine. Well, you can encounter [shitty thing] ANYWHERE, just ignore it and move on. Works for me, why can't it work for you?"

Sounds very familiar to the same type of things that people were subjected to on.... Twitter.

That fediverse superiority joint ain't it y'all. And I can say it's likely to attract the same type of centralized mindset that encourages the opposite of inclusivity.

Keep that in mind.

1 hour left!

Sit with the discomfort. Talk it through with other white people who are on the same journey.

Come talk it through with me! Seriously! If you are *earnestly trying* then I am happy to try to explain the things I have learned so far, or to help you figure out why someone got mad at you for something you intended as helpful.

The biggest thing is that you have to accept that you will keep fucking up, definitely for a while, probably forever.
