#OnThisDay in #history - Maria de' Medici was born in #Italy in 1540.
Maria was the eldest child of Cosimo de' Medici and Eleanora di Toledo. A bright young woman, and exceedingly well educated, she was called into teach her brothers their lessons when their tutors couldn't. She was very much her father's daughter, and was beloved by her family. Maria was affianced to Alfonso d'Este, the future Duke of Ferrera, but she died (likely of malaria) at age 17 in 1557.

Me and a few other climate folks on Twitter have noticed a very clear new prominence of climate deniers and delayers

So with some help, I gathered up some data and checked - it turns out that denial/delay, pro-fossil disinformation accounts have seen massive growth in their audience, while pro-climate-action accounts have either stagnated or shrunk.

Elon Musk is reshaping Twitter into a safe space for right-wingers, and in doing so, empowering climate change deniers, delayers and pro-fossil advocates more than ever before.

I was in middle school at the time. I remember all of the GOP chest thumping about how weak Jimmy Carter was and how big strong Ronnie was going to get our hostages back, meanwhile Reagan was condemning the hostages to more months of captivity to gain electoral advantage.

Politics is a rough and tumble game, so it's not like this is the only "dirty trick" a politician ever played to get elected. But trickery is on a continuum, and this one is pretty far toward the end of it labeled evil.

What an honor & pleasure it was to meet POTUS recently. We talked about gun safety issues - especially the importance of red flag laws & assault weapon ban. POTUS’s knowledge & passion were crystal clear. He was also very funny - as you can see I was unceremoniously cracking up & was still laughing when we took the formal picture! I’m grateful & proud to have this dignified, decent, committed person leading our country.
