The reason why #Threads and #Mastodon are incompatible is that Mastodon is a community, and Threads is a market. That's it.
It's not big Fed vs small Fedi. It's not platforms vs protocols.
It's communities vs markets.
Communities are supportive and markets are extractive. Communities answer to those who must live with decisions made. Markets answer to money.
And wouldn't you know it, those contrasting forces influence people's behaviors, goals, and motivations for engaging with others.
Since we're literally only one issue away from the big #150 finale/line reboot I sent off an email to TMNT's letter column. A new low, even for #Google. Giving Google permission to share information about you with third-party websites is being falsely advertised as an "ad privacy feature". This is privacy washing at its most extreme. But it gets even worse.
There is a dark pattern on the second screenshot. It isn't just informing you about the fake privacy features. Clicking on "Got it" actually turns on these features that allow Google to use your recent browsing history for ads on third-party websites:
